See Me Beautiful Conference
How Our Wonderful EXTRA Humans Learn Best!
Teaching Students with Down Syndrome
Mom/Educator/Advocate/TLP Provider/Business Owner Barb Drummond is on a Mission for Moms (and Dads) who have children with special needs: to give support, raise awareness, assist in programming and so much more. She is also on a mission to provide teachers with ideas and strategies to maximize learning for their students with Down syndrome.
Come and meet Barb who will chat and laugh with you while she shares photos and anecdotes that will motivate and inspire you as a parent and an educator.
The focus for the day will be LEARNING and BEHAVIOUR – how our wonderful EXTRA humans learn best, how having Down syndrome affects learning, and the importance of EFFECTIVE communication between educators and parents. Parents will also gain insight into how to best SHOW OFF their child’s DIVERSIBILITIES.
The day will provide information about how Down syndrome may influence the way your student learns, as well as practical strategies for ensuring the child has the best chance of reaching his/her full potential in your classroom. You will learn valuable tips and tricks for motivation, reducing distractions, and adapting curriculum. Our presenter will explore the behaviours and learning styles that are common to many children with Down syndrome and provide strategies to promote positive appropriate behaviours. She will touch on the importance of daily communication with parents and how to keep it flowing.
Barb is keenly passionate to ensure all children have access to quality, authentic, inclusive education and access to specialized services and resources, all while having fun and keeping sane! Never underestimate a parent with a purpose or a mom on a mission!
Parents: A reminder that our See Me Beautiful slide show is in production so please submit your favourite photos of your special person to joan@manitobadownsyndromesociety.com at your earliest convenience.
Our Presenter – Barbara Drummond
Barb comes to us from Peace River, Alberta, where she and her husband are raising their four wonderful children. Clark, their youngest, was born with Down syndrome. Barb has become “a mom on a mission” advocating for best practice programming for her son and sharing her insight with as many educators and parents as possible. Barb loves cutting-edge techniques and programs that strengthen brain function.
Barb completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1989 and went on to be an Award-Winning Educator. She has taught children from K-9, and also worked as an administrator. Barb won the “Who Makes School Cool Award” in June 2000. She was awarded the Alberta Teacher Excellence Award in 2004 with Provincial Recognition. Barb successfully ran an Education Centre in Northern Alberta with professional tutoring services, sensory suite programming and specialized assessments that reached a variety of clients and students across the country, with tremendous results! Barb wants to live in a world filled with inclusive education, access to essential services, books that come bundled with mint chocolate bar, and a killer cup of coffee, along with the ability to eat plain rippled chips and dip that have zero calories. Barb’s future plans are to finish writing her book and learn how to take naps.
